What Kind Of Computer Would A Webmaster Need?

I am a student and am planning on a career in computers. Would I need a special computer? Mac? Extra memory? Particular graphics card? Money is a limited resource for me, so I need to get this right the first time. Thanks in advance!

You don’t need anything fancy. Web design happens at the pace your type, at least most of the time. You can use nothing but a text editor, but that means having to develop an intimate knowledge of XHTML, CSS, and the like. A WYSIWYG HTML editor means not – needing – to learn all that, but some of the advanced stuff won’t be built in. Your best bet is to blend the two Use a good WYSIWYG editor and learn the manual code that you need for the finer details
A good used PC or Mac will do just fine.
I suggest the Mac, since it is a better platform for reasons that I can type about all day. And since your question leads to a used Mac, you can get one on a budget, making your first dip into the Mac side an easy one.

I would say a mac with a lot of memory. you can ask the consultants in the apple store what graphics card to get. being a webmaster, you dont want any viruses, so a mac would be perfect! if you are a pc person, get the pc program for mac because its much faster and guess what, still no viruses. i think that mac is a great computer for creating websites because it works really fast, has a great look, and no viruses!

First off, no Mac, you definitely want a PC.
Just get something that is a little better then what software you are using.
    Basic requirements.
    Access to the internet
    A plain text editor
    Any other software you use.
So just get something better the the system requirements that are needed to run your extra software. Other then that, nothing special.

While the above answers are true, if you plan on purchasing software such as Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, to use in designing web pages, then I would recommend a pretty souped up computer with plenty of memory that can handle those running at the same time. Photoshop sucks up a lot of RAM.
So you’re better off buying a computer that will run for the next 4 or 5 years, rather than something cheap and outdated now that you’re just going to have to replace to keep up with the software.

Depends on what you mean by webmaster. If you actually want to host the website, the first thing you need is to get a fixed IP address. As far as computer goes, for a small site, pretty much any hardware will do. It’s all in the software. You want to set up a LAMP system: LINUX, Apache (web server), MySQL, PHP or Perl or Python. That gives you everything you need.
If all you want is to develop a site and host it outside, then don’t buy anything, again it’s all in the software. There are a lot of good and inexpensive – even free – software available. Check into HTML-Kit, PsPad, Amaya.

Even the cheapest computer would work on the web. You need very little power to write web pages. But if you want to look cool then get a Mac, you wouldn’t regret it apart from the cost!
If you are going to be making any videos then a more powerful machine is required. If you are developing Flash then you might like a little more power too.
A bigger screen would be helpful so that you can see what your site looks like both big or small.

These guys would be able to help you out,
they custom build a computer for you for anything you need it for and are very cooperative.
I bought a computer from them a while ago and they really give you the best value you can get for your money.

    Good luck.

Well you don’t need anything too powerful for website creating, unless you are planning on hosting websites yourself.
Simply buy a decent AMD Athlon or Intel Pentium processor with around 2GB RAM and 500GB Hard Disk space and you will be fine :)

I develop software and create webpages on an average dual-core, 2GB RAM, GeForce 6400 notebook. It works fine. You don’t need anything fancy. Get Vista Premium though – it’s good to have.
